Abstract

The chain‐bundle dusty plasma liquid (CBDPL) can be formed by negatively charged dusts suspended in weakly ionized low pressure discharges, in which long vertical chains of particles can be induced by the dipole‐like field from the downward ion flow. The different mutual couplings along the vertical direction and the horizontal plane make it an interesting system exhibiting anisotropic dynamical behavior. Through scanning video optical microscopy, we investigate experimentally the thermal excited collective motion of dusts in the CBDPL. Different modes of basic collective excitations such as the wiggling of vertical chains, chain tilting‐restraightening, and chain breaking‐reconnection are observed.
