Abstract

The Bohr-Mottelson collective model is worked out in detail for even- and odd-mass nuclei with stable octupole deformations. Allowance is made for rotation-vibration coupling effects. The transition from octupole vibrations around a spheroidal shape to stable octupole deformation is discussed. The model is applied to the low-lying states of 19F, and reasonable agreement with the experimental data is obtained.
