Abstract
9 November 1999 marked the ten-year anniversary of the German Wende, the peaceful revolution that preceded the unification of East and West Germany. The impact of this change on East German library collections, the book market, and higher education cannot be overestimated. The relative importance of public and university libraries shifted as these institutions integrated themselves into West German librarianship, shaped by democracy, federalism, and capitalism. The resulting changes in collection development, particularly in terms of acquisitions budgets, are still being felt today.
