Abstract

Abstract : The author's tenure as the thirtieth Chief of Staff of the United States Army has drawn to an end. Soldiers, historians, and policymakers will weigh the key decisions made by the Army leadership during the last four years against its success in improving the Army's military capabilities. Although the leadership has had to make some tough choices, the author think that we have made solid progress and that we tried to do what was 'right' for the Army and the nation. This book, a compilation of written and spoken works, is intended to provide insight into the author's tour as Army Chief of Staff by capturing the spirit of these last four years, the rationale underlying important decisions, and the ideas that were fostered during his forty-one years in uniform, including those early developmental years at the United States Military Academy. His hope is that it will help to enhance the professional development of officers and noncommissioned officers, the preparation of general officers, and the knowledge of historians and researchers. The book includes major addresses to military and civilian audiences. Congressional testimony, interviews, published articles, letters to General Officers, and edited White Papers. The editors have prepared a prologue, an introduction to each section in the book, and an epilogeue to assist the reader in using these collected works.
