Abstract

The purpose of this compilation is to publish a sufficiently extensive or representative selection of royal letters and diplomatic documents in Catalan contained in the series of registers of the Cancelleria de l'Arxiu de l'Arxiu de la Corona d'Aragó or Arxiu Reial de Barcelona. The texts correspond to a period of time that begins at the end of the 13th century, with the beginning of the long reign of James II; the choice of this period is due to the fact that this is when royal documents written in the vulgar language began to appear in abundance, always in conjunction with the prevalence of Latin. The first quarter of the 15th century saw, on the one hand, a greater presence of scribes of Valencian and Aragonese origin in the offices of the Chancery, and, secondly, the entry and gradual diffusion of some innovations in the chancellery language.
