Abstract

Electric power generation and transmission and distribution (T&D) providers require a new, clean, reliable, safe and economical power generation alternative. They face escalating atmospheric CO2 and inadequate low, or zero CO2 power generation alternatives. The existing alternatives, chiefly windmills and roof-top solar panels, are pseudo-random intermittent, requiring expensive back-up bulk power and storage above emergency spinning reserve levels, and other expensive alternatives to correct their unpredictability. The increasing adoption of such Monte Carlo power sources erodes the reliability and security of our grids. Space Solar Power (SSP), or Solar Power Satellites (SPS), must be made available as a power generation and transmission alternative to meet this energy and climate challenge. Microwave power transmission can bring that energy safely and reliably from GeoSynchronous Orbit to rectennas on contracting grids. The benefits SSP offers to electric power companies and their customers are best demonstrated by previous Congressionally chartered public-private corporations, most notably Hoover Dam’s Six Company contract, a similarly daunting baseload power generation project.
