Abstract

The book is the most complete account of a central technique of modern visual art, and the first to establish its many and fertile innovations. Reflecting throughout on the major aesthetic and productional inventions enabled by the adhesion of alien material in the art-work, the book covers Cubism, Dada, Surrealism, the post-war revolutions in abstract art, Fluxus, Conceptual Art and recent developments in digital art. It charts the connections of collage with neighbouring concepts such as montage, assemblage, and gives new information on artists from California to Moscow, with Western and Central Europe presented with a formidable range of artists, movements and styles.
