Abstract

Development of smart buildings and devices can lead to a smart world. The primary objective of smart world is to ease humans’ life. Smart buildings are evolving with emerging technologies. These buildings are combination of smart devices that can help in managing facilities and developing organizations. There are no specific set of devices that can describe the design of a smart building; however, these buildings are designed based on a definite purpose and requirement. For instance, healthcare buildings may focus on different purpose than commercial and residential buildings. A smart hospital may need an efficient health monitoring system that can track a patient's condition, whereas a smart home needs a smart kitchen appliance that can prepare food before you reach home. Current market is focused on developing smart devices like smart meters, smart watches, smart phones, smart lighting systems, and smart kitchen appliances. Managing these smart devices efficiently can comfort and improve the quality of human life. Combination of such devices can control and comfort humans’ way of living. An efficient smart building is designed with the combination of well-defined architecture and smart devices that can satisfy the requirement of a building. The primary challenge is developing an architecture for smart building that connect all these devices to provide an efficient outcome. Therefore, building management system (BMS) plays a significant role in integrating and monitoring different smart devices connected in a building. Besides, Internet of Things (IoTs) was helpful in connecting smart devices effortlessly with a converging network. Therefore, smart buildings can be considered as one of the emerging applications of IoTs. Smart devices generate tones of data that need to be processed for efficient design of smart buildings. By analyzing and identifying the patterns from the collected data, we can design an efficient smart building with less energy consumption, high safety, and security systems. Data in each application is collected from different databases or data sources, hence, it is significant to understand and draw meaningful insight from the extracted data. The primary sources of data in smart buildings are sensors and actuators. Integration and proper management of smart devices is a challenging task. The objective of this chapter is to discuss the importance, benefits, and synergic effects of data analytics in smart buildings. In addition, this chapter discusses models that can change the performance with the collaboration of data analytics. The entire chapter is divided into two parts, and the upcoming sections of this chapter are organized as follows: the first part discusses on the significance of the smart buildings for economic and social benefits, and the second part describes the benefits of data analysis for performing multiple functions in smart buildings.
