Abstract

This paper provides an overview of the origin, activities and structure of collaborationist military formations that were created and operated in the area of occupied Serbia in 1941. The Chetniks of Kosta Pećanac, who mostly escaped capture, are mentioned as the first formation to appear, as well as the remnants of the Yugoslav Gendarmerie, whose members returned to their duties in the reorganized Serbian Gendarmerie. The paper also details the circumstances of the creation of NCO Armed and Volunteer Detachments, which were created at the beginning of September 1941. The activities of these Detachments on suppressing the uprising and breaking the insurgent territory in western Serbia and Šumadija at the end of 1941 are also mentioned. The paper was written on the basis of relevant literature and archival material, primarily from the Military Archives.
