Speeches delivered by US government officials to scientific conferences have become one way to reassure researchers that they are still loved, even as their budgets go to the chopping block. At the recent meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Philadelphia, White House science adviser D Allen Bromley took the podium to show that, in the words of AAS president John Bahcall, “he is one of us”.
