Abstract
Rates of severe maternal morbidity (SMM) continue to increase and one-third of maternal deaths occur in the postpartum period. Postpartum women often present for care to the emergency department (ED). Delays in identification and appropriate management of obstetric complications may occur due to lack of knowledge of obstetric complications and protocols. Recently, AWHONN and the Emergency Nurses Association issued a Consensus Statement regarding the importance of collaboration between the two specialties to promote timely access to obstetric care to prevent SMM.
