Abstract

Patients with colitis present diarrhoea, defined as 3 or more loose stools daily. Infectious colitis is defined as colitis in which a microorganism (bacteria, virus or parasite) is shown or assumed to be associated with the clinical condition, either through laboratory techniques or by the presence of a compatible epidemiological flare-up. This review covers the pathogenic aspects, the indications for additional diagnostic tests and the treatment of these patients.
