Abstract

full clinical examination. This should incorporate evaluation of cardiovascular function, auscultation of thorax and abdomen and measurement of rectal temperature. Further tests may then be warranted, normally including rectal examination, passage of a nasogastric tube and abdominocentesis. Practice colic examination forms allow the results of various procedures to be reviewed over time; they are particularly useful if more than one member of the practice goes out to see a case. Other articles in this series will focus on rectal examination, specific features of certain diseases such as grass sickness and any other tests. The purpose of this article is to provide a practical-based review of the main elements of initial physical examination.
