Abstract

The megacolon is an expansion in light in the colon, with dysfunction of the smooth muscles, leading to the retention of feces. This can be caused by physical traumas, metabolic disorders, neurological, behavioral, by endocrinopathies or being idiopathic. When idiopathic it affects animals in average of 5 years of age; that will present display, aquesia, tenesmus, anorexia, vomit, slimming and apathy. The definitive diagnosis is made with abdominal radiography. Treatment may be conservative or surgical, this through colectomy total or partial colectomy. The present work reports the case of a male, feline, castrated 22 year, with a history of recurrent constipation and idiopathic megacolon. This was performed surgically with total colectomy technique, which presented good results as a treatment.
