Abstract

AbstractThe use of hybrid reed‐bed treatment systems to treat domestic sewage has become widespread in mainland Europe and the UK. However, in Ireland, the application of combined vertical and horizontal beds is still at an experimental stage. The existing septic‐tank system at Colecott (County Dublin) was upgraded by the construction of vertical and horizontal reed‐beds in series. This paper discusses the rationale behind its selection, design, construction and operation.
