Abstract

ABSTRACT TO help establish satisfactory design criteria and operating procedures for the natural ventilation of warm swine buildings, data was taken in one totally slotted floor building for sow gestation and one similar building for swine finishing. Many other naturally ventilated swine buildings were visited to determine what combination of ventilation openings and management practices give satisfactory results. Inlet and outlet sizes can be calculated by the formula Q = EAV, with E (effectiveness factor) assumed to be 0.35 and V (wind velocity) assumed to be 12 km/h (7.5 mph). Calculated opening sizes will be satisfactory over a wide range of outside temperatures and wind velocities because swine weighing over 34 kg (75 lb) will perform adequately in a range of inside temperatures from about 7 to 21 C. Provisions must be made for reducing opening sizes temporarily during severe winter storms.
