Abstract

AbstractThe cold rolling of sheet and strip accounts today for a large part of the steel–rolling industry throughout the world. The production sequence for modern continuous cold rolling of steel sheet and strip is outlined including brief reference to blackplate where appropriate. Details of the engineering and production practices on coldrolling mill complexes from pickling, through cold reduction, annealing, and skin passing, to finishing operations are given. Cold-mill rolls, roll preparation and roll changing are covered. The importance of coolant/lubricant in the cold-reduction operation is outlined. Consideration is given to the weights and dimensions, and in particular to the quality and metallurgical aspects of the cold–reduced and annealed product. Brief mention is made of the control and automation of cold-rolling mills.
