Many thermionic vacuum tubes have now been superseded by semiconductor devices but there are many cases, for example at extra high voltages, where semiconductor circuits cannot function with the simplicity of a gas-filled cold-cathode tube. Glow discharge tubes, which include those working in the corona mode, continue to be improved and still retain importance for a wide variety of purposes.
