Abstract

The effect of chromium in increasing the strength of heat treated steel under severe loading conditions conforms with the variation of the cold-brittleness threshold and plasticity of the material. With a high reserve plasticity (carbon concentration up to 0.1%) the addition of chromium within the limits investigated greatly increases the strength. With a carbon concentration of 0.3% the addition of up to ∼1% Cr also increases the strength and lowers the cold-brittleness threshold; further alloying raises the cold-brittleness threshold and induces negligible strengthening.
