Abstract

The effect of cold air drainage on the temperature field of Calgary's urban heat island was studied from data collected from helicopter transects and airborne surveys on 13 January 1976. It is shown that the magnitude of the urban heat island was reduced by about 40 % below its potential value and that the thickness of a ground-based inversion observed over city centre was increased by about 100m.
