Abstract

In spite of the great progress made by the blast furnace process and the increased use of other forms of thermal and chemical energy sources, significant amounts of coke remain essential for hot metal production. Most blast furnace coke is presently produced in regenerative horizontal chamber ovens. As illustrated by the most recently built coke plants in Europe, the multichamber cokemaking system has reached a very high state of development. This does not prevent to take innovative steps in various directions in order to be able to meet the wishes for an environment friendly coke production in the next century.
