Abstract

LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 (LNCA) is one of the most important cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) operating at room-temperature. As an emerging area, LNCA has recently been explored for ceramic fuel cells (CFCs) with a broad temperature range (such as 500–800°C). However, the CFC operating conditions (relatively high temperature and reactive atmosphere) would challenge the structure tolerance of LNCA. Particularly, it is unknown whether LNCA is stable in carbon monoxide (a main product of CFCs with hydrocarbon fuels). Herein, it is the first time to report the CO-induced thermal decomposition of LNCA to Ni/Co alloy, Li2CO3, LiAlO2 and carbon at temperature of 500°C or above. This finding is important for designing efficient LNCA-based electrodes for CFCs.
