Abstract
Recent developments in socio-economic research have centred on the key periods of the Liberal Revolution and state building in Spain, focusing on the analysis of specific landowners. This article discusses the theoretical issues raised by this type of analysis. The authors argue the importance of this method in view of the inadequacy of structure-based analysis of class, experience, interest and action Instead, attention should be paid not only to the simple fact of landowners hip, but to a series of simultaneous and opposite circumstances in terms of income, seigneurial rights and privileges, political traditions and abilities, and relations between landlords and tenants. The main elements of the analysis revolve around the case of the region of Valencia during the nineteenth century.

El desarrollo de la historiografía española en las últimas décadas ha llevado más de una vez a desear el enlace entre lo que podríamos llamar diversos niveles de investigación. Pero precisamente esto refleja el surgimiento de oportunidades cambiantes en las sociedades históricas y el hecho de que quienes viven la historia, lejos de ser prisioneros del carácter unidimensional típico de los «modelos» sociales, tratan de aprovechar esas oportunidades con mayor o menor fortuna. Por eso es necesario no olvidar nunca la frecuente presencia de disparidades de todo tipo entre quienes se caracterizan por una posición estructural, a fin de no perder de vista la amalgama de trayectorias y experiencias que se funden —sólo hasta cierto punto— en el bloque de los propietarios de la época de la burguesía. Por tanto, analizar trayectorias concretas y heterogéneas de integración, mantenimiento o declive en la élite —en la cúpula, por lo tanto— de los propietarios, lo que nos informará de manera más contrastada y no sólo supuesta sobre la importancia de determinados factores en una época dada. El análisis que proponemos pretende mostrar también que los dominados no son necesariamente el «lado pasivo» de la explotación o el «lado de la demanda» del mercado político, sino que —aprovechando los planteamientos de Edward Thompson, Alf Lüdtke o James Scott— la misma hegemonía dominante o los márgenes de rivalidad interna que presenta ofrece canales significativos para la protesta y el influjo de los explotados en la trayectoria de las sociedades
