Abstract

AbstractThe bulk polymerisation of methyl methacrylate and the studies of the resulting polymers have revealed the radical mechanism of initiation with Co(II) acetylacetonate. Copolymerisation studies of styrene/methyl methacrylate, styrene/acrylonitrile, and methyl methacrylate/acrylonitrile under similar conditions, using azoisobutyronitrile, benzoyl peroxide, Mn(III) acetylacetonate, and Co(II) acetylacetonate, have also shown the identical nature of the mechanism of initiation of these initiators. The tacticity of the polymer, deduced from NMR spectra, is identical with that of a polymer prepared with a conventional free radical initiator.
