Abstract
In magnetic traps of electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) sources of multicharged ions not utilizing the minimum |B| magnetic structure, the magnetohydrodynamic instability is likely to develop. A local laser induced fluorescence-type magnetic field diagnostics based on coherent population trapping effect may help in the study of the instability. Theoretical estimates presented in the article show that parameters of plasmas in ECR sources of multicharged ions satisfy the conditions at which the diagnostic works.
