Abstract
The last five years have shown the rapid maturing of coherent optical communication, both in the development of essential components (especially the lasers) and the introduction of new system concepts. This new transmission technique is to play a vital role in the future broadband infrastructure of communications. It combines a higher transmission distance and a much larger capacity compared with all existing communication systems. Coherent optical communication is probably the only solution capable of dealing with the ever-increasing amount of data to be transmitted over the fibre-optical networks that have been introduced worldwide.
