Abstract

Many of the most compelling reasons for a cognitive science approach to the study of the mind come from considerations of how cognition develops. This theme is illustrated through 10 questions: What is the initial state? Is there an adapted mind? Does development proceed from the concrete to the abstract? What is the nature of conceptual change? What is the difference between learning and development? What representational formats underlie developmental change? What is the role of implicit and explicit thought in cognitive development? What is the role of association and rules? Are there developmental universals? and What constitutes a cognitive domain? Possible answers to these questions are illustrated as most fruitfully emerging from the interdisciplinary perspective of cognitive science.
