Abstract

A verbal cognitive restructuring (CR) method was compared to CR plus exposure and vomit prevention (CR/EVP) in the treatment of patients with bulimia nervosa. CR/EVP was significantly more effective than CR in reducing binge eating and vomiting although the two treatments were equally credible and met with similar patient compliance. At 1-yr follow-up CR/EVP Ss were completely abstinent. CR/EVP also resulted in significantly greater improvements on several measures of psychopathology. At 1-yr follow-up, CR/EVP Ss showed major changes in eating habits and cognitions and feelings concerned with food. On these and general measures of psychopathology, CR/EVP Ss scored in the nonproblem, nonpatient range. Ss' prior lowest weights as adolescents were significantly related to treatment outcome.
