Abstract

In order to provide the most effective treatment, there has been increased emphasis on incorporating a client's cultural beliefs in the treatment process. This paper reviews issues in the cognitive behavioral treatment of Orthodox Jewish clients. While there are subgroups of Orthodox Jews, all share one set of beliefs in the strict interpretation of the Torah and its laws. These laws govern people's relationship with others and religious observance. Issues concerning family relationships, women's roles, marital problems, privacy and confidentiality are discussed. Case examples, in the treatment of anxiety disorders, are provided to illustrate how these issues impact and are included in treatment approaches. These discussions are helpful to demonstrate an approach that can be useful in working with clients from diverse religious and cultural backgrounds.
