Abstract

There is a growing evidence base for the use of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for addressing mental health difficulties and core symptoms present in people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This chapter first reviews CBT and evidence-based modifications needed to meet the cognitive, language, and emotional needs of the population. This is followed by an overview of the evidence for CBT for addressing (1) comorbid anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and depression; (2) comorbid behaviour problems; and (3) social competence and affection among people with ASD. CBT for anxiety in children and youth with ASD is supported, and evidence for other comorbid symptomatology is emerging. Limitations of existing studies and directions for future research are discussed.KeywordsAutism spectrum disorderCognitive behavioral therapyCBTAnxietyObsessive-Compulsive DisorderOCDDepression
