Abstract
The method of adding auxiliary slots in the stator or rotor is presented to reduce the cogging torque of a permanent magnet (PM) canned motor. Based on the formula of cogging torque, the optimal number of auxiliary slots is derived. A 3D finite element (FE) method is used to analyze the effect of different shapes of auxiliary slots on the cogging torque. The results show that the auxiliary slots of rectangular shape can effectively reduce the cogging torque.
