Abstract

THE coexistence of cryptococcosis and malignant disease of the reticuloendothelial system is well known. Up to 30% of cases of cryptococcosis have been reported to be associated with Hodgkin's disease, lymphosarcoma, or leukemia. 1,2 Other conditions reported to frequently be associated with cryptococcal infection include tuberculosis, 3-6 diabetes, 5,7 sarcoidosis, 7-18 and steroid therapy. 19-21 Indeed, 50% of the 30 patients with cryptococcal meningitis reported by Spickard et al 7 had a coexisting disease. Although cryptococcosis is said to be more likely to occur in the presence of sarcoidosis, 22 we have found only nine 8-18 such cases described in detail, and two others 7 are mentioned briefly. There are several other patients who had cryptococcosis and in whom a typical sarcoid reaction was present without adequate evidence for the diagnosis of both diseases. 23-25 The following case is the 12th reported documented one of coexisting cryptococcosis and sarcoidosis.
