Abstract

SummaryIn 1708 Duverney first described coexisting extra-uterine and intra-uterine pregnancy at autopsy following a maternal death in the third month of pregnancy. This condition has been estimated to occur in 1 in 30 000 spontaneous pregnancies (DeVoe and Pratt, 1948). The incidence of multiple pregnancy is increased with the use of clomiphene citrate the reported incidence varying between 4·2 per cent (Rust et al. 1974) and 12·8 per cent (Adashi et al., 1979). Accordingly, it might be expected that the combination occurs more frequently. Nevertheless, we find only five previous reports in the English literature of this complication associated with clomiphene citrate treatment.
