Abstract

Extensive agreement is found between the experimental levels in 28Si and the combined SU3-Hartree-Fock and the Nilsson-Strutinsky theoretical treatments. Of particular interest is a K = 0 + band representing a third shape with ϵ ∼ 0.45 and γ ∼ 15° which coexists with the previously known oblate and prolate bands. This new band crosses the prolate and oblate bands in the vicinity of J π = 8 + producing a strong backbend.
