Abstract

Background: Synchronous and metachronous tumors are a unique entity. In the setting of endometrial cancer, most concomitant primary sites include ovarian, colon, and breast cancer. The coexistence of endometrial and hematologic malignancies is rare, with only seven cases reported in the literature. Over a time interval of 10 years, we have encountered this unusual condition in seven patients of our own. This is the most extensive case series published on concurrent hematologic and endometrial malignancies. Methods: Retrospective chart review from 2002 to 2012 was performed. Results: Our patients were referred to a gynecologic oncology office from the years 2002 to 2012 due to endometrial cancer. They underwent surgical diagnoses and staging for endometrial carcinoma. Hematopoietic neoplasms were incidentally diagnosed when histologic analysis of the lymph nodes was performed. The finding of significantly enlarged lymph nodes was described in the operative reports of five out of seven patients. Conclusions: As clinicians, it is crucial to be aware of the various pathologies that can affect cancer survivors, including multiple primary malignancies. Clinical presentation, imaging and intraoperative findings of the most common neoplasms could have a positive impact on patient care. (J GYNECOL SURG 37:479)
