Abstract

In the recent technical literature, several publications have reported the existence of a strong correlation between coercive squareness ( S ∗) and media modulation noise ( N m ) in thin film magnetic recording media. We measured several different thin film media and found that such a correlation between S ∗ and N m does not hold in general, even though it may exist for specific classes of alloys and microstructure.
