Abstract
The article reveals the general characteristics of the development of civil law of the Russian Empire. In particular, four features of civil law of the specified period are highlighted: the absence of a clear sectoral division, the absence of a certain system, the essential importance of customary law, polysystem, i.e. the presence of a special legal regulation of civil relations in certain areas. The characteristics and significance of the Civil Laws of the Code of Laws of the Russian Empire are given, the assessment of the law-making activity of the Governing Senate of the Russian Empire is given, the characteristics of the development of individual institutions are given.
