Abstract

The Ethics Codes Collection of the Center for the Study of Ethics in the Professions at the Illinois Institute of Technology (http://ethics.iit.edu/ecodes/) differs in at least three ways from other collections of codes now available online. First, it is by far the largest, with over 2500 codes (from more than 1500 organizations). Second, it is searchable by discipline and topic, as well as by keywords such as “public,” “environment,” and “sustain.” Third, and most important, unlike most collections, it does not replace old codes with new. Instead, it is a historical database of codes, adding new versions of codes alongside the old, thereby creating a convenient resource for anyone who wants to study the history of codes—as I propose to do here. My subject is not all codes, though, just codes of engineering ethics. Codes of engineering ethics are numerous enough and varied enough for the purpose of this chapter: to demonstrate one use for the Ethics Codes Collection.KeywordsEngineering ethicsCodes of ethicsMedical ethics
