Abstract
Growth factors may act as “survival” factors in vitro and prevent apoptosis. Yet addition of single growth factors to IVF culture media has not been advocated due to concerns about regulation of embryonic cell growth. Co-culture of human embryos with somatic cell monolayers also expose embryos to growth factors but this technique has been accepted and used quite successfully in IVF programs. Embryonic apoptosis within the co-culture environment has not been studied. In this study we characterize embryonic apoptosis in two different coculture systems.
