Abstract

AbstractThis article offers a new interpretation of the ’enigmatic’ cock columns on Panathenaic amphorae, suggesting that the vases portray votive monuments celebrating victories in cockfights. In support of this interpretation, the author uses an epigram of Callimachus, which describes such a monument, contemporary Athenian and non-Athenian votive monuments, which include victory monuments, iconographic analogues, as well as the historical importance of cockfighting in Athenian life. This interpretation stresses the symbolic congruence between the decoration and function of Panathenaic amphorae.
