Abstract

A. Apologize to the patient’s mother, acknowledging her right to be present for discussion of sensitive health information about her daughter. Proceed with questioning the patient about recent drug abuse and then discuss the suspected diagnosis with the patient and her mother. B. Agree that the patient’s mother can be present, but do not specify the suspected origin of the patient’s skin condition. Instead, just call it ‘‘vasculitis’’ and discuss general aspects of management. C. Ask for the consent of the patient’s mother to have a confidential discussion with the patient. D. State that, in specific instances, adolescents maintain a legal right and ethical justification to confidentiality even from their parents and insist that the mother leave the room.
