Abstract

Introduction: Intracapsular tonsillectomy is a relatively new technique with the potential to replace the traditional total tonsillectomy approach. While there have been many studies describing the benefits of intracapsular tonsillectomy is over total tonsillectomy, there is limited literature detailing the actual technique and nuances behind the intracapsular operation, particularly using coblation. This report aims to describe in detail the intracapsular tonsillectomy technique performed at our institution and provide insight on how to approach common issues. Methods: Intracapsular tonsillectomy was performed using a coblator to remove tonsillar tissue down to the capsule, preserving nerve endings and most vasculature. Results: Coblation intracapsular tonsillectomy is an elegant and easy-to-learn technique. Discussion: Intracapsular tonsillectomy is a powerful technique which has become the gold standard at our institution. This article details the basic technique as well as nuances of coblation intracapsular tonsillectomy.
