Abstract

Abstract Marine coatings technology and the role of marine coatings in controlling corrosion are described. Marine coatings aid in the prevention of corrosion of ships, buoys, offshore drilling platforms, piers, locks, and bridges. These coatings impart surface properties, such as fouling protection, which cannot be attained by any other means. Regulations concerning coatings materials and surface preparation methods are summarized. The principal types of modern marine coatings, surface preparation methods, and application techniques are described, advantages and drawbacks are specified, and criteria for selection and use are given. Coating components such as pigment, resins, and additives are provided. The performance requirements for coatings in various ship areas are identified, and the coatings which meet these requirements are described.
