Abstract

Characterization of protective coatings in their development stages is a costly process. This paper will focus on an experimental, economic, sub-scale method used to compare the suitability of several candidate gun tube bore coatings. The paper addresses a methodology to effectively evaluate coatings in the environment of a vented combustor. Although the discussion is specific to damage caused by propellant combustion, the test procedure can be used to discern the integrity of protective coatings used in applications other than armament systems.
