Alexandria and the town of Salum at the Libyan border listed by such ancient sources as Herodotus, the Periplus of Skylax, Strabo, Claudius Ptolemaeus, and the Stadiasmus Marls Magni. Fourtau's observations were not published until a decade later at the outbreak of World War I.3 With a detailed coastal map, photographs, and six site sketch plans, his work retains to this day considerable topographical relevance, particularly for the area of Marsa Matruh or ancient Paraetonium where Fourtau transacted his af-
