Abstract

ABSTRACT In June 2006, two million gallons of oil spilled in to the Calcasieu River near Lake Charles, Louisiana. In response to the spill, the U.S. Coast Guard activated the first Marine Transportation System Recovery Unit (MTSRU) within the Incident Command System (ICS). A MTSRU tracks and reports on the status of the Marine Transportation System (MTS), identifies critical pathways for recovery, recommends courses of action, and provides MTS stakeholders with a means of input to the response organization. The MTSRU was successful in providing valuable recommendations and priorities to the Unified Command; these recommendations mitigated the impact of the spill on both the local and national economies. Due to its success at the Lake Charles event, the MTSRU is now an integral part of the Coast Guard ICS.
