Abstract

The coarsening behavior of high purity SiC particles was investigated. Rapid growth of α-SiC particles, formed due to β–α phase transformation during initial heat treatment, took place at 2150°C. Consequently, a uniform coarse α-SiC powder with a size of 280μm was synthesized. This coarsening process did not depend on the initial particle size. The grown particle size can be controlled by the addition of carbon and α-SiC seed. The particle size decreases as the carbon content and α-SiC seeds content increases. The coarsening mechanism of high purity SiC particles is discussed.
