Abstract

In their recent paper in this journal (J Hepatol 40:501–506) Brunetti et al. [1] compared the diagnostic yield of fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) versus coarse needle (CN) biopsy. They concluded that the advantages of FNAB are lost on its inferior diagnostic performances in the assessment of diffuse liver disease from hepatitis C virus-related chronic hepatitis. During the past decade, emphasis has been placed on the safety and accuracy that can be achieved using fine needle (20G or less) and, therefore, this extensive study is of great importance, not only for clinicians and patients, but also for investigators studying immunopathology of chronic viral hepatitis.
