Abstract

The coarse grid modification of the finite-difference Laplacian to the time-domain solution of Maxwell's equations is applied on a model of photo-induced avalanche discharge of a capacitor in the shape of a rectangular solid consisting of metal end plates separated by a dielectric. The time evolution of the electric and magnetic fields, besides the electron and hole densities and current densities are obtained. The unmodified version (ordinary finite-difference method) of the Laplacian is also used to treat the same problem. The obtained results are compared to see if the coarse grid modification of the Laplacian has any advantages over the unmodified version of the Laplacian.
