Abstract

The process of coalescence of magnetic islands is investigated. For intermediate values of the resistivity $\ensuremath{\eta}$, the reconnection rate ${M}_{s}$ is independent of $\ensuremath{\eta}$, although the reconnection process is basically different from a Petschek-type model. For very small values of $\ensuremath{\eta}$ the dynamics of the coalescence process is more complex with reconnection being significantly slower.
